Colosseum
-Emporer Vespasian ordered the building of the colosseum in 72 ce, and it was finished in 79 ce
-Materials used include concrete, limestone and terra-cota, all of this is covered by marble tiles
-Workers were predominately slaves and the few others that were not slaves were in charge of the design and decoration of the finished colosseum
-The colosseum contains the first use of vaulted arches, the significance is how the vaulted arch is able to support vast amounts of weight

Water Battles
-The colosseum was capable of being drained or filled with water to the first level in 15 minutes, it was not filled higher because it was not water tight above the first level walls
-the limited space required flat bottomed ships that were scaled down versions of real war ships
-Water battles were no longer held in the colosseum because of the addition of
the hypogeum by the Emperor Domition in 96 ce
-Following this the water battles were moved to the adjoining man made lake
-Moving to the lake did have its advantages in the ability to use full
sized ships for the battles

Gladiators
-Entertainment in the coloseum is now seen as cruel often featuring battles
between two or more gladiatiors or a gladiator(s) versus an animal(s), they would
fight many different types of animals such as loins, tigers, bears, leopards and
ostriches
-Not all gladiators were male
-Most female gladiators did not were helmets so as to make their gender known
-Weapons used included swords, spears, nets, crossbows, recurve bows, axes, hammers, and of course his/her hands and feet
-When gladiators faced gladiators, they often faced "his/her opposite" heavily armored vs little armor but heavily armed
-Most gladiators were prisoners of war who would fight until they died
