Men
Pater familias means "father of the family"
-Oldest male of the household
-In charge of his kids' marriages, punishments, slavery
-If someone in his household commits a crime, he is held responsible and must accept the punishment
Women
-Put into the social class of their parents (in some cases the mother's and in some the father's)
-Women took care of domestic affairs and managed the household
-Once they reached middle age, they gained some influence within their families
-Ex. They helped their husbands pick the spouses for their children
-Could not vote or hold office, but some still possessed a great amount of influence
