Greece and northern Italy provided marble for the buildings that awed the ancient and modern people alike. Large quantities of gold and silver were excavated in Spain to mint coins and make jewelry, while mines in Britain produced iron, lead and tin for weapons. Cities and towns throughout the empire established small-scale manufacturing buildings which turned out hand-made pottery, glassware, weapons, tools, jewelry and textiles.
They used the transportation of goods by sea and land. Sea transportation was more common because the Roman navy could almost eliminate piracy. This made sea travel very practical because the only threat was bad weather. Land transportation was only profitable if used for more expensive, small, and luxury goods.
The road system was one that has lasted throughout the ages and are still used today. Primarily the roads were used for transporting military rather than foods and goods. This trade network was vast and greatly improved mobilization times of legionaries. But roads were not used for foods and goods as often because they were slow and expensive.
